Election Reflection

At the time of this writing, there are still a few elections that have not yet been called. In particular, is the one regarding who will be leading our nation for the next four years. There is always an array of emotions depending upon which referendum or initiative did or didn’t pass, or whether the candidates we preferred were elected or not.

No matter what your reaction during times like these, we as believers can be confident about the following things which were true this past Monday (before the election), Tuesday (during the election), Thursday, and beyond (after any and every election):

  • God still speaks this truth He spoke to Daniel in a vision: “Let the name of God be blessed forever and ever, for wisdom and power belong to Him. It is He who changes the times and the epochs; He removes kings and establishes kings” (Daniel 2:20-21a).

  • God still has the ability to do what He told the Psalmist about Himself: “The Lord nullifies the counsel of the nations; He frustrates the plans of the peoples. The counsel of the Lord stands forever, the plans of His heart from generation to generation” (Psalm 33:10-11; read v. 8-17 to get the full context).

  • Jesus Christ is stillLord of all” (Acts 10:36).

  • Jesus Christ is still building His church “and the gates of Hades will not overpower it” (Matthew 16:18).

  • We are still brothers and sisters in Christ called to be “of the same mind, maintaining the same love, united in spirit, intent on one purpose” (Phil. 2:2).

  • We are still commanded to “honor all people, love the brotherhood, fear God, honor the king” (1 Peter 2:17; read also v. 13-16).

  • We are stillurged that entreaties and prayers, petitions and thanksgivings, be made on behalf of all men, for kings and all who are in authority, so that we may lead a tranquil and quiet life in all godliness and dignity” (1 Timothy 2:1-2: read v. 3-4 as well).

  • We are stillaliens and strangers” in this life (1 Peter 2:11-12) whose first calling is to live as “ambassadors for Christ, as though God were making an appeal through us; we beg you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God” (2 Corinthians 5:20-21; read vs. 17-19 as well).

We still get to love the Lord our God with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength and our neighbor as ourselves until the Lord calls us home or He returns to take us home.
