Just Trust Him

I truly appreciate the skill and work of a dentist, but I just wish they could fix my teeth without mouth openers, needles, and drills.

Stephen Erickson once wrote this about choosing a dentist:

Never trust a dentist…

  • …who wears dentures.

  • …who has dirty knuckles.

  • …who chews tobacco and spits the juice into the sink.

  • …who is also a barber.

  • …who sprays his equipment with Lysol to sterilize it.

  • …who uses lead for fillings.

You can always trust a dentist…

  • …who doesn’t ask you questions when your mouth’s full.

  • …who puts you to sleep two weeks before your appointment.

  • …who uses a laser instead of a drill.

  • …who cancels your appointment to play tennis.

  • …who doesn’t strap you in the chair.

The fear of pain and discomfort when you see a grown man in a white coat walking toward you with a needle behind his back and a smile on his face can frighten the strongest of men as you anticipate the injection of a needle or grinding sound and feel of a drill.

The only real antidote is trust in the skill and experience of a gentle professional.

What is true in the dentist’s chair is also true in everyday life. Each day brings an unpredictable series of unplanned trials, challenges, and surprises. 2020 has filled our cups full and overflowing with the traumatic feeling of sitting in a dentist’s chair with all kinds of needles and drills coming at us.

When my kids were little and scared, we used to sing a great song that always calmed them down. It was all Scripture about the perfect skill and experience of our God. David wrote and sang it as a valiant warrior, a giant slayer, and a king who sometimes got scared.

When I am afraid I will put my trust in You. In God, whose word I praise, in God I have put my trust; I shall not be afraid. What can mere man do to me?” Psalm 56:3-4

What’s scaring you these days? Remember that our God is totally trustworthy and highly skilled and experienced to care for you.

Trust in Him at all times, O people; pour out your heart before Him; God is a refuge for us. Selah.” Psalm 62:8

Listen to this children’s song that King David wrote and let it remind you why God told us over 125 times “do not be afraid.”

Pastor Jeff

Listen To It Again! What a great reminder we had this last Sunday about How Great our God is, "How Great Thou Art." (November 29).
