Social Media Dilemma

Last week, I watched The Social Dilemma, a 90 minute Netflix documentary that was very alarming. In it, former social media company executives (e.g., Facebook, Google, Twitter, others) talk about how what began as a beneficial tool for society has now been transformed into a virtual addiction that is “bringing out the worst in society” (Tristan Harris, former Google design ethicist). The practices of social media giants have essentially made them the wealthiest and most powerful influence in the history of the world and are having dire social consequences in people’s lives.

You can watch the documentary on Netflix (warning: 6 expletives) or read this excellent review here.

Why share this?

  1. Our gospel transformation should not allow any lesser rival influences in our lives (Col. 1:16; Ex. 20:3). So be careful to guard your heart (Prov. 4:23; Phil. 4:8; Rom. 12:2).

  2. Our gospel transformation cannot allow any addictions into our life other than the dominating ministry of the Holy Spirit (1 Cor. 6:12; 1 Jn. 5:21; Eph. 5:18). So be careful about falling prey to functional gods (idols) in your life (e.g., social media, food, sports, politics, etc.).

  3. Our gospel transformation calls us to engage our world and other believers around us with God’s grace and truth (1 Pet. 3:15; Col. 4:6). So be careful what you post and share with others (read this excellent article, 12 Questions to Ask Before Posting Something Online).

Social media is commanding and addictive, but the transforming work of the gospel is more dominant. God wants you and me to be wise, useful, and guarded conduits of His eternal blessing to others.
