Why Singing is Essential to Worship

God created us to sing and enjoy the message, rhythm, and emotion of music. When it comes to God’s people, we are specially designed to sing and to sing our praises to God together. Psalm 147:1 says: “Praise the Lord! For it is good to sing praises to our God; For it is pleasant and praise is becoming.”

Here’s WHY it’s so vital.

We obey God when we sing: “Sing to Him, sing praises to Him; speak of all His wonders” (Psalm 105:2; also Psalms 96:1; 1 Chronicles 16:9; Psalm 7:17; Psalm 9:11; Isaiah 42:10).

We exalt and glorify God when we sing:Sing the glory of His name; Make His praise glorious” (Psalm 66:2, also 66:4; 47:6-7; 57:7; 59:17; 61:8; 68:4, 32; 75:9; 104:33; 108:1; 135:3; 138:5; Exodus 15:21; Judges 5:3; 2 Samuel 22:50; Romans 15:9; Hebrews 2:12).

We bless God for what He’s done for us when we sing: “I will sing to the Lord, because He has dealt bountifully with me” (Psalm 13:6; also 21:13; 89:1; 98:1; 101:1; 105:2; 146:2; Jeremiah 20:13; Zechariah 2:10).

We express our joy when we sing: “For You, O Lord have made me glad by what You have done. I will sing for joy at the works of Your hands” (Psalm 92:4). James 5:13 says: “Is anyone cheerful? He is to sing praises.” (Also Psalm 5:11; 9:2; 20:5; 27:6; 59:16; 63:7; 67:4; 71:23; 81:1; 84:2; 87:7; 90:14; 95:1; 98:4; 132:9, 16; 149:5; 2 Chronicles 29:30; Job 29:13; Jeremiah 31:7)

We build one another up when we sing: “Speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs" (Ephesians 5:19a); “Teaching and admonishing one another with psalms and hymns and spiritual songs” (Colossians 3:16; also Psalm 149:1).

We can proclaim the gospel when we sing: “Sing to the Lord a new song; Sing to the Lord, all the earth. Sing to the Lord, bless His name; Proclaim good tidings of His salvation from day to day” (Psalm 96:1-2; also 1 Chronicles 16:23).

We are strengthened through trials when we sing: “But about midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns of praise to God, and the prisoners were listening to them” (Paul and Silas were in prison, in stocks – Acts 16:25).

We deepen God’s truth in our hearts when we sing: “Let the Word of Christ richly dwell within you, with all wisdom teaching and admonishing one another with psalms and hymns and spiritual songs” (Colossians 3:16); “Let my tongue sing of Your Word, for all Your commandments are righteousness” (Psalm 119:172).

We express our thanksgiving when we sing: “Singing with thankfulness in your hearts to God” (Colossians 3:16; also Psalm 30:4,12; 33:2; 57:9; 92:1; 108:3; 138:1; 147:7).

We use instruments when we sing: “I will also praise You with a harp, even Your truth, O my God; to You I will sing praises with the lyre, O Holy One of Israel” (Psalm 71:22; also 33:2-3; 98:5; 144:9; 147:7; 149:3: 150; Job 21:12; Isaiah 23:16).

Here’s one of many songs to sing, so turn it up: Is He Worthy?
