Words that Matter

Did you know there are approximately 470,000 words in the English language according to Merriam-Webster?  And if you include all the various derivatives and inflections, it is estimated there are roughly one million words.

So? Solomon sums it up well: “Death and life are in the power of the tongue and those who love it will eat its fruit” (Proverbs 18:21).

Some words are persuasive and powerful. Words like free, new, guilty, depressed, enraged, I’m sorry, I love you, or popcorn (this always gets my attention). There are so many words that can incite strong reactions in our hearts.

I’m going to submit to you that two of the most powerful words ever uttered are “BUT GOD. …” They may not evoke an immediate reaction, but they can profoundly and eternally transform our lives.

  • But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which He loved us” (keep reading all the way to verse 10). Ephesians 2:4

  • But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.” Romans 5:8

  • “I planted, Apollos watered, but God was causing the growth.” 1 Corinthians 3:6

  • But God, who comforts the depressed, comforted us by the coming of Titus.” 2 Corinthians 7:6

  • But God is the Judge; He puts down one and exalts another.” Psalm 75:7

  • Experience and enjoy those TWO life-changing words and offer up ONE endless thanksgiving.
