Nothing But Jesus!

I was reminded this week of a great truth from the following quote: “Nothing but Jesus can satisfy the soul.” This is attributed to George Whitefield (1714–1770, English Anglican preacher and evangelist who was used by God to inspire the First Great Awakening and Methodism with John Wesley which greatly influenced Britain and the 13 American Colonies between the 1730s and 1770s).

The quote is short, to the point, and a self-evident truth. Jesus famously said things like, “for apart from Me you can do nothing” (John 15:5) and “I came that you may have life, and have it abundantly” (John 10:10) to reveal Himself as the great Satisfier of our soul.

We must remember that people will fail you. Friends will fail you. Family will fail you. Spouses will fail you. Churches will fail you. Leaders will fail you. Employees will fail you. Employers will fail you. Politicians will fail you. Teachers will fail you. Teammates will fail you. But our Lord and Savior will NEVER fail you. I love what Asaph said in Psalm 73: “Whom have I in heaven but You? And besides You, I desire nothing on earth. My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever” (v. 25–26).

Regardless of how bad things may get, every blood-bought, fellow-heir of Jesus Christ can rest in the following truths:

  • Jesus is alive (Matthew 28:5–6).

  • Jesus is reigning (Hebrews 12:2).

  • Jesus is praying for you (Hebrews 7:25).

  • Jesus is building His church (Matthew 16:18).

  • Jesus is preparing a place for you (John 14:2).

  • Jesus is perfecting you (Hebrews 12:2).

  • Jesus is keeping you saved (John 10:27–30).

  • Jesus is returning for you (1 Thessalonians 4:16–17).

  • Jesus is always with you (Matthew 28:20).

  • Jesus loves you (Ephesians 5:2).

No song captures this reality better for me than the classic “In Christ Alone” and I love this particular version.

Cling to Christ!

Pastor Jeff

When I was young, I was sure of many things; now there are only two things of which I am sure: one is, that I am a miserable sinner; and the other, that Christ is an all-sufficient Savior.
— John Newton (1725-1807 – former investor in the slave trade, captain of slave ships, English evangelical Anglican preacher & slave abolitionist)
