Passing the Baton
In the New Testament, we see Paul surrounded by different people in Discipleship relationships. Barnabas was a disciple-maker who took a special interest in Paul, Silas was his companion and friend, and Timothy was his “son in the faith.” Each of these relationships teaches us about the importance of intentional, Christ-centered relationships in the church.
16 Thoughts for Christian Citizens
It’s election season (in case you haven’t noticed—haha), and the local, state, and national marketing campaigns (about candidates, initiatives, tax measures, etc.) are at full throttle (television, social media, digital and print ads, yard signs, newspapers, town halls, rallies, etc.), and they are using every conceivable tactic you can imagine (attack ads, fear mongering, opposition research, character assassination, spreading lies, dog whistles, guilt by association, polarizing wedge issues, strategic timing of scandalous revelations, the echo chamber effect, manipulating sound bites, astroturfing, etc.) to make a final plea for your vote.
Lonely?
Last year, the Surgeon General Vivek Murthy issued an advisory on loneliness as being one of the top health threats to Americans' health and well-being (Our Epidemic of Loneliness and Isolation). The advisory noted that the impact of social isolation on mortality is similar to that caused by smoking up to 15 cigarettes a day. Loneliness not only increased the risk of heart disease, dementia, stroke, and premature death, but it is very expensive (accounting for more than $6.7 billion in excess Medicare spending annually).
The Importance of Nothing
This last week I listened to a mini inspirational speech on the "Importance of Nothing" by Nick Saban, sportscaster, analyst, and former and future hall of fame football coach of the Alabama Crimson Tide. Here is what he said:
It Matters What You Believe!
This past Friday, I stopped by Costco to talk to an AT&T agent about my cell phone. The agent I met was a young gal in her early twenties who was very sweet and helpful. As I conversed with her about her life and upbringing, she told me she had left home at age 18 (from the Seattle area) to follow her boyfriend to the Midwest where all her dreams and hopes dwindled away when their relationship ended after a few years of great disappointment. She returned to Seattle to be closer to her family and shared she was putting the pieces of her life back together.
Nothing But Jesus!
I was reminded this week of a great truth from the following quote: “Nothing but Jesus can satisfy the soul.” This is attributed to George Whitefield (1714–1770, English Anglican preacher and evangelist who was used by God to inspire the First Great Awakening and Methodism with John Wesley which greatly influenced Britain and the 13 American Colonies between the 1730s and 1770s).
What a Savior!
This note might come across as a little different or perhaps even a bit weird from me, so hang in there until the end.
This last Saturday, I had the privilege of speaking to 44 Young Adults from Living Hope Bible Church (Issaquah) at their weekend retreat. I met their pastor, Joe Lum during COVID and we encouraged each other and exchanged ideas with other pastors about how our churches were navigating the onerous COVID restrictions.
Stop It!
In my Bible reading this week, I was accosted by two words Paul wrote to the Corinthians: “stop sinning” (1 Cor. 15:34). Most believers would think this kind of hard edict is unhelpful until you remember that it is direct revelation from God to Paul to His church, and the Scripture is chock-full of many reasons why this needs to be shouted from the housetops.
Better Than a Three-legged Chicken!
I saw the new movie Reagan this week, and it was inspirational and moving. I highly recommend it. It made me recall one of my favorite jokes President Reagan used to tell.
